Abstract

A modification of the ammonium nitrate claimed in the parent Specifications consists of ammonium nitrate particles whereof every 100 parts carry on their surfaces 0.001 to 1.0 parts by weight of a soluble salt of a polysulphonated derivative of a triamino substituted triaryl methane dyestuff or a lower N-alkyl mono substituted derivative thereof, the aryl groups of which are phenyl or tolyl groups or any combination of these; being other than Acid Magenta (C.I. No. 692). These dyestuffs have a solubility of at least 0.5 per cent in saturated aqueous ammonium nitrate at 20 DEG C and condition the ammonium nitrate IV crystals produced from the saturated solution to [010] prisms, laths, plates or scales instead of the usual [110] elongated prisms or needles. Lower alkyl means alkyl groups having up to 3 carbon atoms. Suitable polysulphonated derivatives are: the ammonium salt of trisulphonated pararosaniline, rosaniline and p p1 p11 triaminophneyl-di-tolyl-carbinol anhydride; the ammonium or calcium salts of trisulphonated new magenta; the sodium salt of trisulphonated N-mono-methyl triamino tritolyl carbinol anhydride; Red Violet 5R.S. (C.I. 693). The mixture may be prepared by (1) effecting direct crystallization or granulation of ammonium nitrate from a solution containing at least one of the dyestuffs; (2) wetting granules of ammonium nitrate with at least one of the dyestuffs in aqueous solution or in solution in liquid ammonia or Diver's liquid (75/25 ammonium nitrate/liquid ammonia) and removing water or liquid ammonia by drying or evaporation respectively; (3) dry mixing dyestuff and ammonium nitrate; or (4) mixing ammonium nitrate and dyestuff absorbed on an absorbent such as kieselguhr.
