Abstract

664,868. Forging-machines. CHAPPUIS, J. A. July 14, 1949, No. 18563/49. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 25, 1950.] Class 83 (iv). In a method of forming a metal article, a cold metal blank is rendered plastic by subjection to a rapidly increasing pressure applied through an elastically strainable element in which energy is thereby stored until the blank acquires sufficient plasticity, whereupon the stored energy is automatically released to effect a flowing of the metal into the required shape. The press-head comprises one part 11 coupled to a crank-shaft by connecting-rods 10, Fig. 1, and another part comprising a bush 13, column 14 and die-holder 15. The column 14 has a screwed lower end engaging the bush 13, a screwed upper end engaging a nut 22 and a plain intermediate portion which is guided in a bush 12 screwed into the upper end of the part 11. A resilient tube 20 is clamped between the two bushes 12 and 13. When, on the down stroke of the head, the die carried by the holder 15 engages the work, the tube 20 is compressed. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the resilient member comprises three interfitting tubes 23, 24 and 25, the intermediate tube being subjected to tension and the outer tubes to compression. In another form, the resilient member comprises a single flanged tube subjected to tension on impact. The die-holder 15 may carry tool elements 34, 35 and 36, Fig. 7, which co -operate with a lower fixed tool 37 and stripper elements 40. The element 35 co-operates with the tool 37 to punch a blank from a strip 33 and the elements 34, 36 subject the blank to the rapidly-increasing pressure and then deform it to the shape shown during the expansion of the resilient element. Fig. 11 shows another shape to which a blank is deformed by tool elements 41, 42 and 43.
