In a record player having a stack of records supported on a shaft 11 extending upwardly from the turntable and a record pressing plate 12 bearing on the record pile, the plate '12 carries an abutment 6 which, when the last record of the stack has been played, blocks the pick-up arm from moving outwards and causes means connected to the pick-up arm to stop the driving motor. The record changing mechanism is set in operation by means as described in Specification 664,621 which connect gear 53 to a pinion on the motor shaft and thus cause connecting link 64 to move a sliding lever 59. A cam lobe 105<SP>1</SP> on the latter pivots the pick-up arm .7 through connection 98 and another connection releases a record from the bottom of the stack. The return stroke of lever 59 brings the pick-up back to the commencing position against a stop pin 101 controlled by a feeler 104 in accordance with the size of the record descending on the turntable. At the end of the last record the sliding lever 59 is actuated as usual to move the pick-up but the abutment 6 has now fallen in the path of the latter and the pin 77 on the arm becomes immovable and the spring 74 connecting lever 59 to the slider 73 actuating pin 77, is stretched. Slide 73 is displaced laterally and swings member 83 to operate a push button 81 stopping the driving motor. In order to release the apparatus from the stopped position plate 12 is rotated by hand to free the pick-up which is then carried by the spring energy to its playing position. A pin 47 on the shaft of plate 12 moves star lever 90 which frees the pick-up pin through linkage 94 and also moves a lever 85 frictionally coupled to the motor operating member 83. On the return of plate 12 to playing position the motor will be started by the return motion of lever 85. The machine can be stopped while the stack of records is unfinished by rotating plate 12 by hand.
