698,719. Magazine gramophones. PAILLARD SOC. ANON. Dec. 17, 1951 [Aug. 20, 1951], No. 29449/51. Class 40 (ii). The cycling disc 1 controls a record supporting spindle as described in Specification 694,837, a device for feeling the diameter of records as described in Specification 689,765, a timing device as described in Specification 689,766 for giving a pause between records, and the movement of the tone arm. The gramophone is controlled by a manually operated control 77 having "Stop," "Start," and "Reject" positions. When the control is moved to "Start," a rod 76 moves a lever 33 to engage a surface 33b with a finger 40 and to cause a finger 35 to rotate a lever 27 and close a switch 32 to start the motor and drive the turntable through its spindle or through a friction disc acting on its periphery as described in Specification 691,774. When the control is moved to "Reject," the finger 40 engages a surface 33c and a lever 12 is moved to disengage a stop 10 on the disc 1 and the disc 1 rotates under the action of a spring 18, until the disc engages a driven pinion 4 which drives the disc until a gap 9 is opposite the pinion. During the rotation of the disc the control 77 is returned to " Start " by a spring 80 to bring the lever 12 into line with the strip 11 to stop the disc. In this position, a wheel 19 of the timing device is brought into operation by engagement with a pin 75 on the pinion 4; a link 42 places the pick-up arm in its outer position; and the pivot 44 allows a lever 51, Fig. 3, to push a finger 56 to raise the pick-up arm. After a predetermined time, the timing device 19 moves, through a wire 21, the lever 12 sufficiently to release the stop 11. A spring 30 then moves the lever 27 and a cam 14, fixed to the disc 1, through an angle sufficient to re-engage the pinion 4 with the disc 1. The disc, driven by the pinion 4, now completes its cycle and the cam 14 through a lever 15 moves the timing device to an inoperative position. Also through the action of levers 42, 47, the pick-up arm is returned until the end of the lever 48 abuts against the cam 49 of the device for feeling the diameters of the records, and the lever 51 allows the pick-up arm to fall onto the edge of the record to be played. While the pick-up approaches the centre of the record, the finger 56 moves a lever 62 and through a rod 66, attached to it by a friction device 64 a tap-tap mechanism comprising a lever 67 and the pin 75. When the pick-up reaches the end of the record, a pawl 70 on the lever 67 falls into a notch 73 and the lever 12 is moved to start the next record changing cycle. When all the records have been plaved, a detecting device as described in Specification 689,090 lifts the lever 33, so that a pin 79 on the disc 1 engages the finger 35 on the lever 32 to move it into a position with the surface 33a engaging the finger 40, i.e. with the control lever 77 in the "Stop" position. When the control is at "Stop," a pawl 83 prevents the lever 48 from moving in a direction which will move the tone arm over the record.
