664,410. Uniting by fusion; making hollow; ware. FIRESTONE TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd. Nov. 11, 1948 [Nov. 19, 1947], No. 29317/48. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). A thin-gauge metal vessel, such as a beverage container, is formed by inserting a closure member 12 into a cylinder 10, to abut against a shoulder 14 rolled into the wall of the cylinder, and applying welding heat to fuse the cylinder and closure member together ; the closure members are a press-fit in the cylinder. During welding, the cylinder is rotated past an electrode 19 and inert gas is supplied to the area of the joint through pipes 16 and 17, one of which passes through a hole 15 in one end closure. Cooling rings 21 prevent undue spread of heat. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also welding an end closure which engages the cylinder solely through the press-fit engagement, without the abutting shoulder, and also describes forming a bead 42, Fig. 6 (Cancelled), on a cover 40 by a similar method. The free end of the bead, before welding, is bevelled to give a greater contact area and a recessed cooling ring 47 is provided. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification, as accepted.
