Abstract

664,004. Ceiling lighting installation. HOLOPHANE, Ltd. (Holophane Co., Inc.). Sept. 7, 1949, No. 23185/49. Class 75(iv) Alighting installation recessed into a ceiling comprises at least one fluorescent lamp unit suspended from permanent supports in the ceiling and at least one incandescent lamp unit secured to the end of the fluorescent unit. A lamp unit comprising a trough-shaped sheet metal casing 14 containing fluorescent lamps 13 and closed by a dished front glass 12 with longitudinal prisms on its lower side is secured in a recess in the ceiling 10 so that longitudinal flanges 19 on the casing contact the edges of the recess from below. The securing means comprises yokes 15 on the casing which are bolted to brackets 16 secured to ceiling channels and which have a plurality of bolt holes to permit vertical adjustment. The incandescent lamp unit comprises an inverted sheet metal box 26 closed by a lens plate 33 supported by a U-sectioned frame 27 disposed around the mouth of the box and providing a horizontal platform 28 which is bolted at 44 to an L-bracket 21 secured to an end plate 20 of the fluorescent unit so that its horizontal part is slightly above the ceiling. A cast metal member 40 for filling the gap between the frame 27 and the adjacent end of the fluorescent unit is bolted at its upper part to the platform 28 and the incandescent unit is drawn upwardly by the bolts 44 until a flange 41 on the filling member 40 abuts the flanges 19 on the fluorescent unit. A symmetrical reflector 37 or an adjustable reflector and lamp combination as described in Specification 618,712 may be fitted within the incandescent unit or the unit may comprise a fixed lamp and reflector adapted to illuminate elongated areas with a lens system projecting a divergent beam inclined to the vertical as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,280,160. Several units of each kind may be arranged in various patterns, thus a straight line, an L or a T or a cross pattern may be formed. That side of an incandescent unit which is not positioned alongside the end of a fluorescent unit is bolted to a strap provided in the ceiling.
