Abstract

Lighting, systems of.-In a system cf lighting in which a wall 2 or similar surface is illuminated by one or more projectors 9 arranged above a slot 1 in a ceiling or the like at a distance from the wall, the slot is provided with optical means to direct the light so that the whole of the wall is illuminated. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the optical means comprises prismatic glasses 4 fitted into flat and wedge-shaped frames 3, 10 respectively. Various arrangements of the prisms for different shaped slots are illustrated in the Specification. The directive prisms may be formed on either or both surfaces of the plates, and diffusing prisms also may be formed on the plates or on separate pieces of glass. The plates may be enclosed on either or both sides by plain glass, and a safety screen of wire netting may be provided outside the glass. The projectors 9, which may be of the kind described in Specification 271,212, may be carried by a box-like structure, some or all of the walls 5 of which may be formed as, or provided with, doors. In, the form shown in Fig. 5, use is made of a preferably hinged reflector 11 adapted to form an apparent closure for the slot 1 which is left open. The reflector may have a curved mirrored surface, which is preferably made diffusing, or it may be formed by reflecting prisms. In another form, an invisible row of lamps may be arranged on each side of the slot and a reflector mounted over the slot. When a reflector is used, the slot may be covered by a glass plate provided with diffusing, refracting, or both diffusing and refracting prisms. The invention is particularly applicable to changeable colour lighting for cinematographic and other theatres, and it is preferred to mount the pilot lights for low illumination inside the main lighting apparatus and to arrange the switches so that, when the main lighting is switched off, pilot lighting of the same colour is left on.
