Abstract
663,872. Cathode-ray tubes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Nov. 9, 1948 [Nov. 13, 1947], No. 29092/48. Class 39 (i). [Also in Group XL (c)] In a pulse code modulation transmitter (see Group XL (c)), a signal is converted into sevenunit code groups by a cathode-ray tube as described in Specification 637,820. The mask apertures are arranged as shown in Fig. 2 to produce pulse groups in which the code for each number differs from the code for its adjacent numbers in only one digit, but other arrangements are stated to be possible, which fall within the specified code requirements. In one receiver, Fig. 4, each of a pair of translator circuits comprises a condenser 70, 701 upon which a stepped voltage wave is developed and a cathode-ray tube 74, 74<SP>1</SP>, respectively. The group A of positive pulses is inverted by amplifier 72 and fed through rectifier 71 to the condener 70 where the negatively rising wave B is developed. This wave is applied to deflecting plates 73 of the tube 74 and moves the beam 77 so that it strikes the mask 78 on alternate steps but passes through a slot to strike the target 76 on the remaining steps. Specifications 663,837 and 663,838 also are referred to.
