Abstract

663,837. Cathode-ray tubes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Dec. 12, 1947 [Dec. 13, 1946], No. 32803/47. Addition to 637,820. Class 39 (i). [Also in Groups XXXV and XL (c)] In a signalling system as claimed in the parent Specification in which the amplitude of a complex wave is sampled at recurrent intervals, an electron beam of a cathode-ray tube is deflected in one direction by plates 33, Fig. 1, to an extent in accordance with the amplitude of each sample to select a path and is swept along that path by sweep circuit 34, and a coding element 26 comprising a plate with rows of apertures formed therein produces pulses at the target 25 representing by a permutation code the sampled signal wave amplitude, a grid electrode 28 is arranged in front of the coding element 26 and is connected by a feed-back path comprising amplifier 44 to the deflecting plates 33 so that as a result of current flowing to grid electrode 28 a feed-back voltage is applied to plates 33 to hold the beam in the selected path. The coding element 26 may have five parallel rows I ... V of apertures 27 therein, as shown in Fig. 2, and the grid 28 comprises a number of parallel wires aligned with the apertures in the coding element and secured to a frame 28. Members 26, 28 are secured together by insulating studs 32. The signal sample is applied to plates 33 via condenser 42 and leaks slowly away through resistor 43 so that the beam, deflected initially to a point between two grid wires 31, moves to contact a wire 31 so that the feed-back to plates 33 is varied and consequently the beam is held against the grid wire for the duration of the sweep. The beam is thus held in its correct path during a sweep despite slight variations in the input signal or misalignment of the grid wires with the direction of the beam sweep or disturbances in the beam sweep system. To avoid coding errors, the beam may be blanked and the feed-back circuit closed or the feed-back circuit opened and the beam left on until the plates 33 are energized. In a modification (not shown) a seven-digit coding element may be used. Specifications 630,094, [Group XL (c)], and 633,838 are referred to.
