Abstract

663,601. Surgical appliances. DAVOL RUBBER CO. Aug. 27, 1949, No. 22309/49. Class 81 (ii) [Also in Group V] In making an inflatable catheter, a preformed tube, forming the air passage, is embedded in the wall of the body portion, the body preferably being produced by dipping. In the described process a preformed rubber tube 19, Fig. 7, closed at one end by a plug 21, is placed in a longitudinal groove 18 in a metal former of otherwise circular cross-section. The outer end of the tube 19 is secured to a lateral support 23 and the whole is dipped in rubber to form the tubular catheter body, 10, Fig. 1. A hole, communicating with the interior of the air tube, is burned radially through the body and a sleeve 13 is fitted over it and cemented at its ends to form the balloon sac. One or more apertures 12, communicating with the interior of the catheter tube, are burnt through the closed end and the complete appliance is then vulcanised.
