Abstract

1487601 Nasal tampons G H GOTTSCHALK 9 Oct 1974 [9 Oct 1973] 43795/74 Heading A5T [Also in Division F2] A nasal tampon comprises a rubber or plastics tube 94, Fig. 1, having an inflatable balloon 96 secured around a portion between the ends thereof, a hollow bulb 102 integral with the tube and adjacent an open end thereof, apertures 100 in the tube providing communication between the interior of the tube and the balloon to permit inflation thereof by fluid introduced into the tube, and a oneway valve assembly 104, Fig. 4 for permitting the introduction of fluid into the tube, the said bulb 102 being self-sustaining in the absence of internal pressure. The valve assembly comprises a valve body portion 106 extending into the open end portion 108 of tube 94 and a tubular portion 112 extending outwardly from portion 106, an internal valve seat 118 being defined between portions 106, 112. An elastomeric body 122 movable within portions 106, 112 has a shoulder 126 which normally rests on the valve seat, said shoulder being retained on the valve seat by inwardly turned portions 128 at the inner end of body portion 106. On inserting a nipple 138 of a syringe 136 into portion 112, the valve body 122 is compressed to thus move shoulder 126 away from seat 118 and fluid from the syringe is able to pass past said seat and along passageways 132, formed between ribs 130 on body 122, and grooves, formed in the interior surface of portion 106, and thence through apertures 100 into the balloon 96 for inflation thereof. The bulb serves, when the tampon is inserted into a nostril, to prevent the tampon being aspirated by the patient when the balloon is not inflated, the bulb anchoring the tampon against the nostrils. The balloon may be inflated with air or water.
