Abstract
663,428. Paper &c. tubes. GONDA, D. July 7, 1949 [July 7, 1948], No. 17995/49. Class 99 (ii) [Also in Groups V and VIII] Laminated tubes used in the production of hollow structural panels of a kind such as is described in Specification 546,089, [Group VIII ], are formed from helically wound strips of fibrous material e.g., paper, wood, veneer, fabric, impregnated with thermo-setting plastic material. Strips 11-15 may be wound with close butt joints to form continuously a multi-ply tube 16 which is advanced by a looped belt 17 using apparatus which may be of the form described in Specification 657,298. In order to ensure that the joints of successive superposed strips of each tube are spaced apart axially of the tube thus preventing superposition of joint crevices the strips are made successively wider to compensate for the effect of the increasing diameter of each winding relative to the adjacent inner one, the pitch of the joints being the same for all the layers. The resin with which the strips are impregnated is not in adhesive condition during the winding and an adhesive e.g., Scotch glue, which may comprise aqueous formaldehyde solution, or a watersoluble phenol or melamine formaldehyde resin which will not subsequently interfere with flow and curing of the resin is applied as bands 22 and 23, 24, on the strips 11 and 15 to secure the windings in position. Each tube is deformed by passage through rollers 25, 26, 27, 28 to have walls 16a - 16d which are initially bulged inwardly but afterwards spring out to form a tube of quadrilateral cross-section.
