Abstract

663,333. Safety valves. DEWRANCE & CO., Ltd. (Manning, Maxwell & Moore). Sept. 8, 1949, No. 23263/49. Class 135. To prevent leakage and the pitting and distortion of the contact surfaces in a safety valve having a movable valve member biassed into contact with its seat member, the contact surface on at least one of the members is provided on one side of a thin flange element formed on or affixed to the member, the other side of the element being exposed to fluid pressure, whilst the contact surfaces are made of like or unlike materials having a low coefficient of expansion and freedom from welding together. A spring-loaded, boiler safety valve 3, Fig 1, operable at high pressures, e.g. 1,500 p.s.i. and having a movable valve member 7 screw-threadedly mounted in a surrounding skirt 8 and co-operating with a seat member 4, is formed with a thin annular flange 18, Fig. 2, the tip 19 of which contacts the seat member. The skirt 8 is slidably guided in a member 9 secured between the valve casing 2 and its bonnet 12 whilst the seat 4 is surrounded by a removable blow-down ring 6. When the valve is closed, steam pressure acting on the upper surface of the flange 18 assists closure and, due to its flexibility and thinness, tends to increase the contact area between the valve and its seat and rapidly dissipates any heat to prevent local cooling and distortion and hence leakage. In a modification, the seat member 4, Fig. 5, is also provided with a thin annular flange 25. In another arrangement, the undersurface of the valve member flange is made plane instead of conical and cooperates with a plane seat surface. The contact surfaces are of like or unlike materials selected from 13 per cent chromium steel, nitriding steels, cupronickel alloys and the Registered Trade Mark materials Invar and Stellite. A deposit of chromium on the seat member may also be used.
