Abstract
663,179. Pulse modulation. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., HEAD, N. E., and KAYE, E. J. Sept. 16, 1949 [Sept. 16, 1948], No. 24367/48. Class 40 (v). Relates to the conversion of duration modulated signal pulses to rectangular amplitude - modulated pulses of constant duration, The duration-modulated pulses 6 are applied to an integrating capacitor the voltage on which rises to a value 7. The capacitor retains its charge until discharged at the point 8 by a valve rendered conductive by the input pulse after passage through a delay device of predetermined time constant. The longer pulse 61 produces the output pulse 7<SP>1</SP> of correspondingly greater amplitude. To eliminate time modulation a gating device may be provided to slice a rectangular pulse 9 from the trapezoidal output pulse. This may be accomplished, in a time division multiplex signalling system, by using an electronic distributer in which an electron beam crosses a target electrode in a time less than the duration of the pulse applied to its control grid.
