Abstract

581,811. Pulse modulation; pulse generating circuits. LAWSON, D. I., and PYE, Ltd. Dec. 18, 1942, No. 18030. [Class 40 (v)] Signals are transmitted as a sequence of constant-width pulses, of which the timing, phasing, or frequency is varied in accordance with the signal voltage. The pulses may be radiated on an ultra-high frequency wave. In Fig. 5, a sinusoidal wave of pulse frequency is modulated in amplitude by the signal M and the resultant applied to trigger a pulse generator at a particular voltage level S, with the result that the pulses P shown in the lower part of the Figure are modulated in phase. In Fig. 6 a transitron pulse generator comprises a pentode valve V with a condenser C2 connecting the screen grid to a point between resistances R5, R6 in the earth connection of the suppressor grid. The circuit oscillates by virtue of negative transconductance between the screen current and suppressor grid voltage, and the pulses are sharpened by the provision of the coil L and resistance R9 in the cathode lead. The signal voltage is applied to the control grid, and a wave S of pulse frequency to the suppressor and screen grids, causing phasemodulated pulses P to appear across the cathode impedance L, R9. The pulse generator may comprise a multi-vibrator circuit with reciprocally-coupled valves, and the signal and the pulse-synchronizing waves may be applied respectively to the grid and cathode of one of the valves (Fig. 7, not shown). The generator may alternatively comprise a cascade pair of valves coupled by resistance-capacity coupling, and with a back coupling afforded by a resistance common to the cathode leads (Fig. 8, not shown). Reception is effected by applying the pulses in the positive sense to the grid of a valve V13, Fig. 9, thereby discharging the condenser C13, which during the pulse gaps is being charged through a resistance R13. The signal is taken off across the condenser through a low-pass filter. Specifications 511,222 and 523,575 are referred to.
