Abstract

662,590. Cranes. DEHN, S. G. (Lake Shore Engineering Co.). Aug. 11, 1949. No. 20930/49. Class 78 (iv). A ship-mounted crane for loading and unloading a ship's cargo is arranged to be movable in an athwart passage in a ship and includes a crane frame movable along rails extending lengthwise through the passage and two separate booms on the frame and mounted along the frame sides for synchronous reciprocation relative thereto, the booms being extensible and retractible lengthwise to the frame through at least one port in the ship's hull and means mounted on the booms and movable relative thereto for raising and lowering a load. The crane has four pillars 41 supported at the corners of a base and has wheels 47 engaging flanges on side members 26, 27. Side brackets 45 engage the pillars and have rollers 49 beneath the flanges to retain the wheels 47 in transverse position. The crane is transported by operating a motor 56 through reduction and bevel gearing to drive a pinion engaging a rack 32 on the rails 26, 27. The boom 93, 94, runs on pairs of rollers 86, 87 and 89, 90 secured in an aperture 42 in the pillars 41. The boom is operated by a rock and pinion device from an electric motor 100 through reduction and bevel gearing. A hoisting pallet 139 may be suspended at either end of the boom, the cable 1:31 passing round end pulleys, one end being anchored at 132 and the other secured to a winding drum 160 which is driven through gearing from an electric motor 146 to raise or lower the load. The electric motors are included in circuits with limiting devices, brakes and speed control. Operation is by controls 187, 188 at each end of the crane frame and by a foot control 189 for the boom. In a modified form, the base structure is raised and the supporting pillars reduced in height. The wheels of the crane run in side channels, and the crane is transported by a central rack and pinion engaging the undersurface of the upper deck. The control cabs extend beyond the frame to give better observation position and free the deck from obstruction.
