Abstract

662,568. De-watering aqueous slurries electrically. DOBLE, S. M., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 13, 1950 [April 13, 1949], No. 10023/49. Class 41. A plant for de-watering slurries comprises a settling tank 1, two electrodes 2, 3 connected to an electric circuit, the cathode 2 being adapted to float on the surface of the slurry, and suction means being provided for the removal from the tank of the gas produced by electrolysis. The anode 3 may comprise a shallow metal box provided with a perforated lid and containing graded limestone, a pipe 4 leading from the inside of the box, for drainage purposes or for the application of a vacuum for removal of the gas. The inner end of the pipe may be protected from blocking by the limestone, by the use of jets, small orifices, or a second perforated plate or gauze 5. One or more secondary electrodes may be provided for use in the event of breakdown of the electric circuit due to drying out of the solids adjacent, to the anode.
