Abstract

662,516. Stoppers; vent fittings. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Sept. 26, 1949 '[Feb. 24, 1949], No. 24626/49. Classes 21 and 125 (iii) A filler cap, especially for the master cylinder reservoir of a motor vehicle hydraulic brake system, has a hollow body part inside which is a transverse partition forming a chamber thereabove, a vertical standpipe passing through the partition and extending up into the chamber and two vertically spaced vent holes being formed in the chamber wall, one near the partition and the other on a level with the upper end of the standpipe. In the form shown, the cap 10 consists in a lower portion 14, externally threaded and flanged at 19, and upon which is mounted a hollow portion 17, shaped as a hexagon externally to facilitate removal of the plug, and provided with vent holes 23 and 24 in its side wall. The part 17 is sealed at the top by a plug 26 and separated from the part 14 by a diaphragm 16 in which is formed an axial standpipe 22 whose upper end terminates level with the vent 24. A filter 27 is provided in the part 14 to prevent dirt from entering the container and below the filter are baffle plates 28 and 34 which prevent liquid in the container from splashing onto the filter. When the volume of liquid in the container changes, air can readily enter or leave, but any water or dirt entering the vents is trapped in the part 17 and drains off through the lower vent 23.
