Abstract
1291307 Venting fuel tanks. BRITISH LEYLAND (AUSTIN-MORRIS) Ltd 19 April 1971 [18 April 1970] 18613/70 Heading B7H [Also in Division B8] In a motor vehicle a fuel tank 1 has a filler pipe 2, opening near the bottom of the tank, a main vent pipe 6 extending a short distance into the tank and opening into the filler pipe, and a constricted breather tube 7 connected to an evaporative emission control system. During filling the liquid rises until at A it blocks the end of vent pipe 6, the liquid level then rises up filler pipe 2 indicating that the tank is full but ensuring a space above the liquid in the tank for, for example, expansion. Vapour escapes through tube 7 which is connected to a liquid/ vapour separator 11 and a charcoal filled canister 12, the latter serving to adsorb noxious vapours.
