Abstract
1,238,435. Motor vehicle fuel tanks. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 26 Feb., 1970 [27 March, 1969], No. 9264/70. Heading B7H. A motor vehicle fuel tank has in its upper part flow restricting ducts 22 connected to atmosphere through flexible pipes, a filler pipe 26 projecting into the tank, and an equalizing chamber 28 which is mounted on the inner end of the filler pipe 26 and has first and second flow restricting apertures 32, 33 respectively in its upper and lower portions. The filler pipe 26 has venting apertures 31 above the equalizing chamber 28 to facilitate escape of air from the tank during filling after the inner end of the pipe is covered. After the tank has been filled right to the top, fuel enters the equalizing chamber 28 through the aperture 32 as air escapes through the aperture 33 and the fuel level in the tank falls to provide sufficient expansion space to avoid fuel loss due to temperature variations. The equalizing chamber 28 is formed from two annular sheet metal shells 29, 30 connected by welding or soldering and is press-fitted to the inner end of the filler pipe 26. A nipple 16 for the connection of a fuel withdrawal line carries a filter 17.
