Abstract
662,147. Force feed lubricating. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd. Feb. 7, 1950 [Jan. 7, 1949], No. 525/49. Class 12 (iii). Lubricating mechanism for an intermediate or translational bearing of contra-rotating airscrews comprises oil pumps 8 adapted to be driven continuously by relative rotation of the two airscrews for circulating oil through the bearing 4 and an oil reservoir 7 in communication with the pumps 8 and bearing 4 for supplying oil to the pumps and for receiving oil drained from the bearing, the supply of oil to the bearing being proportional to the speed of rotation of the airscrews. The bearing races are carried by inner and outer parts 5, 6 of a housing, the parts being in driving connection with the adjacent airscrews. The reservoir 7 is contained within the part 6 which also carries the pumps 8, inlet valves 12 and outlet valves 15. The pumps 8 are of the intermeshing gear-wheel type and have shaft connections to multi-start worms 10 in driven connection with a worm wheel 11 carried by the inner part 5 so that the pumps are driven at a speed proportional to the speed of rotation of the airscrews. The inlet and outlet valves 12, 15 are centrifugally opened and spring closed, the arrangement being such that the outlet valves 15 open at a lower speed than the inlet valves 12. One or more breather valves 18 which are also centrifugally opened and spring closed are provided. A removable plug 19 is fitted for topping up the reservoir with lubricant. In operation lubricant passes from the reservoir by way of valves 12 into passageways 13 to the pumps 8 from which it is pumped through passageways 14 to the bearing. From the bearing, lubricant passes through passageways 16 and through valves 15 back to the reservoir 7. In a modification pumps driven by worm and spur gearing deliver lubricant to the bearing from which it is centrifugally returned, the inlet and outlet valves being dispensed with.
