Abstract

662,046. X-ray apparatus. DELHUMEAU, R. A. Nov. 15, 1949 [Nov. 25, 1948], No. 29260/49. Drawings to Specification. Class 98 (i). A grid for absorbing secondary radiation comprises a plate of a substance permeable to X-rays formed with fine and close grooves extending through part of its depth, filled with a substance impermeable to X-rays. The grooves may be parallel to each other, or may comprise two groups, grooves in each group being parallel and crossing the grooves of the other group. The grooves are cut or engraved in the plate, and may be directed towards the X-ray source by forming the grooves at progressively increasing inclination to the central groove or by bending the grooved plate. They are filled with thin sheets of lead foil, or with an X-ray absorbing liquid such as mercury or an amalgam of mercury with, e.g. silver. To fill the grooves with liquid, an auxiliary plate may be placed over the grooves, which are evacuated to draw the liquid into them. A second plate may be fixed to the grid to cover the grooves. The grooves may be so close and fine that when the grid is stationary during an exposure the pattern does not obscure the X-ray image, or the grid may be moved during exposure. When the grid has two groups of grooves and is to be moved, the grooves of both groups are formed at an angle to the direction of movement.
