Abstract

661,957. Modulating apparatus; valve amplifying circuits. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 12, 1948 [Nov. 17, 1947], No. 29476/48. Classes 40 (v) and 40 (vi). The final low-frequency amplifier of a radio transmitter is coupled to the modulator through a circuit arranged to filter off unwanted harmonics of the audio signals to an auxiliary loading resistor, and to present a substantially constant impedance to the amplifier over the useful audio frequency range. As shown, the final L.F. amplifier 3 is coupled to the modulator and R.F. stages of a transmitter by a circuit comprising a shunt capacitor 9 in series with a resistor 10 and a series inductor 8. The values R, L and C of the resistor 10, inductor 8 and capacitor 9 are chosen so that R = #C/C, and R is substantially equal to the input resistance of the modulator 7. This ensures that a constant impedance is presented to the output of the amplifier, while unwanted harmonics are dissipated in the resistor 10. Part of the modulated output of the transmitter is rectified at 11 to give an overall feed-back, which is combined at 13 with unwanted harmonics taken from a tap 12 on the resistor 10 and fed through an amplifier 15 to the input of the low-frequency amplifier.
