Abstract
661,594. Clay compositions. HOLTZMANN, A. April 13, 1949, No. 10059/49. Class 70 Clayey earth is converted to a semipasty consistency by mechanical means, mechanically divided into elements which have a wall thickness not exceeding the " critical thickness," dried, baked at a temperature below its melting or fusion point and cooled. The "critical thickness" is defined as being equal to twice the thickness of the layer formed when the material is first baked. In the example, the plastic clay is extruded as a hollow bar which is cut into appropriate lengths, dried at 400‹ to 500‹C, baked between 750‹ and 1100‹C and cooled. The process may be continuous, and the material may be used as a concrete aggregate.
