Abstract

661,483. Measuring heat quantities. WALTER, A. H. (Sutton, T. C., in part). March 3, 1950 [March 4, 1949], No. 6026/49. Class 97 (iii). In order to reduce the radiation from the bomb 10 of a bomb calorimeter to the container 12 the bomb is encircled by a single thin sheet 14 of metal so that its heat capacity compared to that of the system as a whole is relatively small. This sheet metal wall 14 is supported by resilient gripping means, e.g. three spring fingers 15 which grip the outer surface of'the bomb and space the wall away from it. The lower part of the wall is cut away at spaced intervals around its circumference to provide the ports 16 and has secured to' its lower edge a ring 17 located in a circular recess disposed eccentrically in the bottom of the container so as to leave on one side of the wall 14 an enlarged space 18 between the wall and bomb to accommodate the thermometer 20. Three feet 13 support the bomb on the container. An impeller 42 rotated by an electric motor 36 supported from a movable arm 35 causes the liquid to circulate in the container over and under the edges of the wall 14. An electrical contact 21 is arranged on the bottom of the container, which contact is connected by a conductor to a terminal on the outside of the container 12, the circuit within the bomb, for igniting the contents being completed through the bottom wall of the bomb, feet 13, bottom of container and a conductor, to an outside terminal. The container is encircled by a jacket wall 28 spaced away from it to provide a heatinsulating space, and the whole assemblage is located in the outer casing 30 and supported on the bottom thereof by a pedestal 31. The space between the jacket wall 28 and casing 30 is filled with liquid which may be stirred by air bubbles supplied through pipe 51. An annular closure member 32 for closing the space between jacket 28 and casing 30 carries an upright 34 which supports the arm 35 and electric motor 36 and also an arm 44 for supporting the thermometer 20.
