Abstract

661,388. Self-wringing mops. WEGER, K. June 24, 1948, No. 17044/48. Class 19. A self-wringing mop of the kind shown wherein a scrubbing.cloth or like mopping material 2 is held in working position by two clamping elements 4, 15, one mounted rigidly and the other swingably on the end of a handle 1, the mopping material being drawn up between the closed clamping elements, Fig. 2, to be wrung put and the swingable clamping element 4 then being swung away from the: fixed element 15 and subsequently swung back again to allow the mopping material to pass down to and thereafter be .held in its original working position, is characterised by the provision of two lever systems, one for moving the swingable clamping element 4 and the other for moving the mopping material, and means for actuating each of said lever systems, said actuating means being in positions adjacent to each other when the mopping material is in its working position. In the mop illustrated, the lever system for moving the mopping material comprises a throw-over lever 11 which is pivoted on the handle and has an actuating handle 12 provided with a V-shaped rod 10 whose ends are fastened to the top edge of fringed cloth mopping material 2. Clamping element 15 may be a roller but preferably is in the form of a crosscleat secured to the end of the handle 1; it is overlaid by the beaded flange 3 of a guide cage 5 through which the mopping cloth is drawn up in the wringing operation. The swingable clamping element 4 is a roller rotatably supported in one arm of a bifurcated lever 6 pivoted on pins 7 on handle 1, the other arm of said lever 6 being connected to one end of a tension spring 8 whose other end is attached to a stretcher lever 9. Upward movement of lever 9 turns lever 6 whereby the clamping element 4 is moved to the closed position. In use, the throw-over lever 11 is positioned as shown in Fig. 1 with the roller 4 in the closed position; then handle 12 is swung upwards to draw the mopping material between the closed clamping elements in the wringing out operation (Fig. 2). To restore the mop to the working position, stretcher lever 9 is swung downwardly to unclamp the swingable clamping element 4, whereupon throw-over lever 11 is also swung downwardly, thus putting the mopping material in working position (Fig. 1) and finally the clamping elements 4, 15 are closed by upward movement of stretcher lever 9. Automatic release of stretcher lever 9 following the wringing operation is effected by means of an extension 13 on throw-over lever 11; when lever 11 is pulled down to restore the mopping material to working position, the extension 13 releases stretcher lever 9 (Fig. 2) whose downward movement is then maintained by tension spring 8 whereby roller 4 is swung out and the mopping material unclamped. In addition to the cage 5 additional guiding means for the mopping material are provided by arms 14.
