Abstract

661,154. Electrodeposition of tin-nickel alloys. IRELAND, J., and PARKINSON, N. April 19, 1950 fNov. 22, 1949], No. 29854/49. Class 41. Tin-nickel alloy coatings containing not more than 90 per cent nor less than 50 per cent of tin are electro-deposited from an aqueous solution of salts of tin and nickel containing the respective metals in proportions between 2 to 1 and 1 to 7. The electrolyte may contain the cations of an alkali-metal or ammonium, and the anions may be chlorides or fluorides alone, chlorides and fluorides, or chlorides, sulphates and chlorides. The tin and nickel cations may be replenished by using anodes of a tin-nickel alloy. Alternatively separate tin and nickel anodes may be used, the total current being passed through the anodes successively or being divided among the anodes used simultaneously. It may also be desirable to use either tin or nickel anodes and to replenish the other cation by means of suitable salts added to the bath.
