Abstract

660,574. Universal joints. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 21, 1947 [Nov. 21, 1946], No. 30893/47. Divided out of 660,560. Class 80 (ii) [Also in Group XXXII] A resilient connection comprises two concentric tubes 1, 2, bonded together by opposed pads of rubber 3, such that relative radial movement of the two elements in a direction at right angles to the diametral centre line of the pads is initially resisted solely by stressing the rubber in shear. The tubes may be axially displaced during bonding and brought into line when mounted to prestress the rubber. One or both pads may have an integral layer of rubber 3a bonded to a peripheral surface between the pads to limit, by compression relative radial movement of the tubes. The connections are shown employed as resilient bushes circumferentially spaced in the flanges of a resilient gear wheel, and in Fig. 5 they are spaced with their axes radial to connect a gear 17 on a quill 18 to an axle 19. The connections are mounted on the brackets 20 rigidly, driven from the gear 17, and the outer tubes are rigidly or slidably held between a driven member 21 and a clamping ring 22.
