Abstract

Coating compositions comprise a wax and a copolymer obtained from the copolymerization of a mixture containing 5-40 parts of a conjugated diene aliphatic hydrocarbon and 95-60 parts of a monomer of formula (R)n.C6H(5-n) (C.R1 : CH2) in which R and R1 are inert hydrocarbon radicals, a halogen, e.g. chlorine and bromine, or hydrogen, and n is 0, 1 or 2, e.g. styrene, and o-and p-chlorostyrenes. Optionally the compositions may include fatty acids, e.g. arachidicbehenic acids or a stearic-palmitic fatty acid eutectic mixture, plasticizers and natural or synthetic rubbers and resins. Specified dienes are butadiene-1,3, isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl butadiene-1,3; pentadiene-1,3, 3-methyl pentadiene-2,4, 3,4-dimethyl pentadiene-2,4, hexadienes and heptadienes. Specified waxes are paraffin, microcrystalline, ozokerite, ceresin, utah, montan, carnauba, candellila, japan, cotton, bayberry, myrtle, spermaceti, beeswax, and synthetic waxes. The natural or synthetic rubbers and resins may be glycerol abietate, glycerol esters of polymerized rosin, hydrogenated rosin and glycerol esters thereof, phenol-modified pentaerythritol rosin esters, poly-alpha and beta pinenes, polystyrene, paracoumarone-indene resins, rosin-modified maleic anhydride, rosin-modified alkyd resins, rosin-modified phenol - formaldehyde resins, gum dammar, chlorinated diphenyl, chlorinated paraffins, chlorinated natural rubber, cyclized polyisoprene, congo resin, polyvinyl acetate, and copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, and vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. The plasticizers mentioned are polybutylene, polybutadiene, polymethylcyclopentadiene, copolymers of isobutylene and butadiene, butadiene and vinyl pyridine, and isobutylene and styrene, triphenyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, butyl stearate, toluene sulphonamide, bodied castor oil, hydrogenated methyl abietate, diethylene glycol dipropionate, chlorinated diphenyl, dibutyl sebacate, triglycol di-2-ethyl butyrate, o-cresyl-p-toluene sulphonate, paracoumarone-indene resin, bodied linseed oil and polymerized linseed oil. The compositions are used for coating sheet materials for use in packaging (see Group VIII). In an example an aqueous emulsion containing styrene, butadiene, dodecyl mercaptan, potassium persulphate and sodium resinate is polymerized until it has a latex content of 35 per cent, the reaction is stopped by adding 1,4-dibutoxy benzene and the latex precipitated by addition of an alcohol.
