Abstract
1385345 Latex compositions POLYSAR Ltd 1 Dec 1972 [3 Dec 1971] 55685/72 Heading C3P A composition useful as a coating for paper comprises (A) 10-40% on a dry weight basis of a latex of a copolymer prepared from a mixture of (1) 15-30 wt. per cent of chloroprene or an acyclic conjugated C 4 -C 8 diene, (2) 70-85 wt. per cent of a mono-olefinically unsaturated monomer free of carbonyl groups, and (3) 0-10% by weight, in place of the same amount of monomer (2), of an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid; and (B) 60-90% on a dry weight basis of a latex of a copolymer prepared from a mixture of (1) 0À1-5 wt. per cent of an unsaturated carboxylic acid, (2) 0À1-5 wt. per cent of an unsaturated aldehyde or ketone and (3) 90-99À8 wt. per cent of a mixture of 30-60 wt. per cent of chloroprene or an acyclic C 4 -C 8 conjugated diene and 40-70 wt. per cent of a mono-olefinically unsaturated monomer free of carbonyl groups. The carbonyl-free monomers are preferably alkenyl aromatic compounds. The latices are prepared by conventional emulsion polymerization methods. Exemplified copolymers are derived from (A) styrene, butadiene and optionally itaconic acid, and (B) butadiene, styrene, itaconic acid, acrylic acid and acrolein. The mixture may be compounded with fillers, adhesives (e.g. starch) &c. to form a paste for coating paper.
