Abstract

Artificial materials containing mixed polymerizates from 2-chloro-1 : 3-butadiene and an ester, halide or ether of vinyl alcohol or a vinyl ketone or acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid or an ester of one of these acids by joint polymerization of the components or by polymerizing one component in the presence of the partially or completely polymerized other component, wherein the polymerization is accelerated by the application of heat or by the presence of a peroxide or of a considerable amount of air to such an extent that it is practically completed within forty hours. The polymerization may be effected in emulsion, preferably aqueous, and in the presence of an emulsifying-agent having no saponifying action on the substances undergoing polymerizates, suitable substances, which may be added during the polymerization, including water soluble polyvinyl alcohol or a cellulose ether. In examples: (1) 2-chloro-1 : 3-butadiene is polymerized with vinyl acetate or acetate in the presence of benzoyl peroxide; (4) vinyl butyrate and 2-chloro-1 : 3-butadiene are polymerized in aqueous emulsion in the presence of benzoyl peroxide using as emulsifying-agent partially saponified polyvinyl acetate; (6) ethyl acrylate and 2-chloro-1 : 3-butadiene are polymerized in aqueous emulsion in the presence of hydrogenperoxide using as emulsifying agent a water soluble partial saponification product of a polyvinyl formal; (7) vinyl chloride and 2-chloro - 1 : 3 - butadiene are polymerized in aqueous emulsion using an emulsifying-agent a water soluble partial saponification product of polyvinyl ethyl ether. Softening agents, solvents, solvent promoters, natural and artificial resins, cellulose and its derivatives, water repellent agents, fillers, pigments, dyestuffs, fibrous fillers and waxes may be added to the products. Specifications 387,340 and 387,363 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 referred to the preparation of mixed polymers from 2-chloro-1 : 3-butadiene and another polymerizable unsaturated organic compound or compounds. Compounds specified included unsaturated oils of vegetable, animal or mineral origin, such as linseed oil, soya oil, castor oil, wood oil, fish oils or polymerized, oxidized, sulphurized and chlorinated oils such as blown oils, stand oils, linoxyns and faetis, vinyl alcohol, styrol, butadiene, vinyl acetylene, divinylacetylene and derivatives thereof, such as partially hydrogenated divinylacetylene, or intermediate condensation products of aldehydes alone or with ureas or phenols or polymerization products thereof. Examples referred to interpolymerization of 2-chloro-1 : 3-butadiene and linseed stand oil or tung oil. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
