Abstract

660,304. Tubular posts. MASTS, Ltd. Nov. 30, 1949 [March 30, 1949], No. 8691/49. Class 20(i) A hollow tapering, tubular pole, standard or the like, has the taper of successive sections taken along at least the major portion of the length of the pole from the base thereof decreasing as the distance of the sections from the base of the pole increases. The pole may be made in one piece or may be built up from hollow truncated conical shaped units or sections made from thin sheet metal and adapted to fit one inside the other. The units may be other than circular in cross-section and can be manufactured from materials such as prestressed concrete, artificial resin or resin bonded plywood, or spun glass. A sectional pole, Figs. 1, 2, has sixteen hollow metal sections fitted together so that the taper of the sections, taken from the bottom of the pole, decreases as the height of the pole increases. The taper of the lower or base sections can be varied within limits determined by the lap joint, that is, although the taper decreases as the height of the pole increases the rate of decrease may vary. For example in a pole of sixteen sections the rate of increase of taper (starting from the top of the pole) of the four uppermost sections may increase uniformly, whereas the rate of increase of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth sections from the top although varying uniformly relatively to one another, might not vary at the same rate as the four uppermost sections. The thickness of each section may also be varied in order to give approximately constant stress values for the sections. In sectional metal poles the units are forced together until contact is affected over the entire area of lap joint contact. A large diameter base section 16 may be employed to give greater foundation strength.
