Abstract

659,976. Electro-deposition of tin or tin alloy. CARNEGIE-ILLINOIS STEEL CORPORATION. Oct. 14, 1949, Nos. 26406 and 26407. Convention dates, April 27, 1949, and May 27, 1949. [Class 41] An addition agent for acid tin and tin alloy electro-plating baths consists of 60 to 85 per cent by weight of 4-4<SP>1</SP> dihydroxy-diphenyl sulphone and the balance of 2-41 dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone. The agent may be present in a bath in an amount between 50 and 100 per cent of the maximum solubility in the bath. Preferably not less than two grams per litre should be used, and not more than approximately one gram per litre less than the quantity required to saturate the bath with the agent. Fig. 1 shows the effect of the addition agent in various proportions of the two ingredients, upon the operating current density range of three varieties of acid tin-plating baths, the upper curves 1, 2, 3 defining the maximum current densities and the curves 1<SP>1</SP>, 21, 31 defining the minimum current densities for acceptable coatings. The addition agent may be used in various baths, the preferred baths being those containing sulphuric acid, phenolsulphonic acid, a mixture of phenolsulphonic acid and sulphuric acid, or hydrofluroboric acid. A suitable electrolyte for use in depositing lead-tin alloy coatings consists of phenolsulphonic acid 65 to 330 grams per litre, tin and lead 20 to 80 grams per litre and the addition agent 5 to 25 grams per litre.
