Abstract

659,732. Floor-treating machines. HAUSER, C. Aug. 16, 1946, No. 24489. [Classes 19, 60 and 138(i)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A surface working machine, e.g. for floors, comprises a rotatable drum and a set of interchangeable attachments suitable for perfoming different operations on the surface being worked and each provided with means whereby it may be detachably secured to the drum, at least one of the said attachments being in the form of a network of steel shavings. An electric motor 1 arranged within a horizontal cylindrical working drum 7 has a shaft 2 substantially coinciding with the' drum axis and carrying at each end a bevelled friction wheel 3 preferably provided with a rubber tyre; each friction wheel 3 drives three friction wheels 5, rotatably mounted on pins 4 screwed into the lateral walls of the motor casing, driving a rubber ring 6 secured to the interior of the drum 7. The drum may have a grinding cloth pasted thereon; interchangeable working attachments each have a turnbuckle 10 for attachment to the drum, the attachments comprising steel shavings, steel wire brushes, fibre brushes and hair brushes for respectively abrading, brushing, polishing and wiping. The ends of the drum 7 are closed by plates 11 to which the casing of the motor 1 is secured by screws 12. Flat iron bars 13, 19 secured to the plates 11 carry the sheet metal housing 36 which includes a dust catcher 34. Four rollers 21 are supported each in a fork 20, each fork of the two front rollers being carried by a flat iron bar 14 screwed to plate 11 and adjustable to either of two positions each of which is located by a separate screw hole for the screw 25 of the bar 14 and a corresponding stop 24 on the plate. Each fork of the two rear rollers is connected by a flat iron bar 26 to an adjusting lever 15 pivotally mounted on the bars 13 and engageable in different grooves 16 on the housing 36. The fork 17 of a handle is pivotally mounted on hollow axles 28 screwed into the plates 11. The motor cable 35 is fixed to the fork 17 by clips 37 and passes to the motor through one of the hollow axles 28. The dust catcher 34 comprises the horizontal suction tubes 23 symmetrically arranged in axial alignment, having a radial inlet and an axial outlet. Two fans 29 disposed in the outlet openings are mounted on a common shaft having a grooved pulley 18 driven by cord 22 for a grooved pulley 9 connected for rotation with one of the friction wheels 5. A metal sheet 30 fixed to the dust catcher 34 divides the dust stream and leads it to the inlet openings of the suction tubes 23. Dust sucked by the fans 29 falls down into a container 27 forming the lower part of the dust catcher 34 and detachably hinged thereto, the container 27 having a handle 38. A partition 32 extending downwardly in the upper part of the dust catcher 34 guides the dust into the container 27 while the flow of air is deflected and passes upwards through a first filter 33 into a chamber behind the partition 32 and then through a second filter 31 in the well of the dust catcher 34 to the outside. The suction device may be omitted and the opening to the dust catcher so arranged that dust is centrifuged into the dust catcher by rotation of the working drum, the circulating air flowing through filters to the outside.
