659,585. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 15, 1949, No. 32219. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1948. [Class 35] A dynamo-electric machine is cooled by a fan 21, the air inlet of which is guided by an annular baffle-member 22 having a number of resilient projections 27 formed at its periphery which engage a corresponding number of slots 26 formed at the periphery of an annular flange 25 of the end cover 5 of the machine. When the baffle member 22 which has a bow portion 24 and the end cover 5 are assembled with the shell 4, the edge 25 of the cover 5 tends to force the baffle-member into the interior of the machine against the spring pressure of the projections 27 bearing against the shell 4. Holes 28 in the baffle-member receive through-bolts which secure the end cover 5 to the shell 4. The lubrication of the shaft extension 9 is effected by a wick 13 fitted in a transverse opening 14 in the bearing 8. The wick 13 is resiliently urged on to the shaft extension 9 by a spring 15, and the lubricant is drawn by the wick from a reservoir 11. A lubricant thrower 16 and a plurality of lubricant-throwing grooves 161 in the shaft 2 serve to throw centrifugally, back into the reservoir 11, the lubricant which travels along the shaft in the direction of the rotor 1. Any lubricant travelling in the opposite direction is thrown by a lubricant thrower 17 into the cavity 18 whence it returns to the reservoir 11 via a passage 19.
