Abstract

A parasiticidal composition comprises benzene hexachloride, and a 2.4-dinitrophenol substituted by a hydrocarbon radical or a salt of such a substituted phenol, in such proportions as to be mutually activating. The benzene hexachloride is preferably the gamma isomer. Specified substituted phenols are 2.4-dinitro-6-methyl phenol, 2.4-dinitro-5-methyl-phenol, 2.4-dinitro-6-isopropyl-phenol, 2.4-dinitro-6-secondarybutyl-phenol, 2.4-dinitro-6-phenyl-phenol, 2.4-dinitro-6-benzyl-phenol, 2.4-dinitro-6-cyclohexyl-phenol, 2.4-dinitro-5-cyclohexyl-phenol and 2.4-dinitro-6-normaloctyl-phenol. The salts specified are the sodium, potassium, ammonium, calcium magnesium, copper, and amine salts of certain of these dinitro-phenols. The compositions may be applied as solutions or emulsions in water, oil-water emulsion compositions, alcohol, acetone, chlorinated hydrocarbons, or kerosene; or as dusts by the addition of diatonaceous earth, clays, talc, charcoal, gypsum, wood flour, pyrophyllite or volcanic ash. In the preparation of emulsions, dispersing agents such as sulphonated castor oil, sulphite waste liquor, sodium lauryl sulphate, dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate, polyoxyalkylene derivatives of sorbitan trioleate, and polyethylene glycol phenyl isooctyl ether may be used. Other toxicants such as rotenone, pyrethrums, organic thiocyanates, lead arsenate, nicotine sulphate and sulphur may be added. Concentrates may take the form of liquid or solid compositions containing all the necessary ingredients for subsequent emulsification with water or other liquid carrier.
