Abstract
659,554. Casting-machines. PLASCO, Ltd. Sept. 24, 1949, No. 24603. Convention date, May 12, 1949. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii)] In a pressure-casting machine with a gooseneck movable to disengage from the die after casting, a submerged pump for injecting the metal is arranged in the lower part of the gooseneck and connected to actuating means above, the pump being made of material capable of resisting molten aluminium or its alloys. A ceramic link 38, Fig. 2, may be used to connect the pump to actuating means above the metal m. This means may comprise a spring-raised piston 23 actuated by compressed air supplied through a spring-returned valve 67, Fig. 1, opened by a cam 66 on a driven shaft 60. Another cam 61 of this shaft acts through a bell-crank 62, 64 to move the gooseneck 11 about pivots 18. The coupling 38 is secured to a flanged guide rod 44 movable in a bore of a fixed plug 42. The flange 39 and plug are connected to the ends of a metal bellows 40 which is filled with molten metal, through a valve check 48, by opening a valve 54 to exhaust the air and then closing it by operating a screw 57. In a modification the bellows is replaced by a flexible diaphragm 78, Fig. 3, the valves 48, 54 are omitted and molten metal is admitted to the forcing chamber 77 by lifting the diaphragm from the fixed plug 42<SP>1</SP>. Tungsten articles.-To resist the effect of molten aluminium the pump parts 39, 40, 42 and 44 are made of tungsten but the coupling 38 and rod 55, which are also exposed to air, are made of ceramic material.
