[Class 28(ii)] Sausage casings 5 filled by a nozzle 4 are linked by squeezing them at spaced intervals between two spaced pairs of opposed teeth 7 on pairs of upper and lower wheels 7 and by rotating or twisting the sausage length lying between the pairs of teeth while held at the squeeze points during rotation. The twisting is done by a yoke or cage of rollers 21, Fig. 4, gripping all around the sausage skin 5, the cage being bodily rotated intermittently in timed relation with the squeeze of the sausage at the spaced points. The twist is applied to alternate sausages in opposite directions of rotation. This intermittent rotation is started by a pin 41 on the first lower wheel 6 engaging a pin 42 on a valve rod 37 which is then moved to the left to admit pressure fluid through a valve 34 to a piston 30 which works an attached yoke 28 which pushes a pin 26 on a gear wheel 25 to rotate it one step. The gear wheel is coupled to rotate the sleeve 18 and cage 17 intermittently through a belt 18 &c. After this twist and when the next linked sausage is intermediate the pairs of spaced squeeze teeth 7, an opposite rotation is given to this sausage by the actuation of the valve rod 37 to the left whereby as explained below the piston 30 is moved to the right with consequent reversed rotation of the sausage gripping rollers 21. This is caused by a pin 51 on the right hand lower roller 6 engaging under a cam surface 50 of a latch 45 so pivoting it clockwise about 46, and releasing 44 from 43 so that spring 39 can slide the valve rod 37 to the right to admit pressure fluid to the left side of the piston 30 to move it as above. The freely mounted rollers 21 inside the rotated sleeve 18 hold the individual sausage after twisting. Further holding is done by the set of idler rollers 52 at the exit.
