Abstract
659,505. Pipe joints. STONE, A. L. March 25, 1949, No. 8203. [Class 99(i)] A pipe joint comprises screw-threaded tapered spigot-and-socket members 10a, 11a, having a spiral clearance space between the threads and a seal 16 of deformable material such as of a soft sealing metal, resinous, plastic or rubber composition which is inserted in a bore 17 formed in and intersecting the threaded portion of one of the sections (as shown), or within co-operating bores in said sections and intersecting the screw-threaded portions thereof, Fig. 6 (not shown), to dam the space and prevent leakage therethrough. In the latter case the seal is held in position by a plug threaded into the bore 17 of the socket 11. The seal may comprise a cylindrical plug projecting beyond the crest of the threads of its associated member or be provided with thread segments on its inner face to coact with the other member. The seal may be bonded in position and a sealing compound used between the threads. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the seal is contained in a bore which extends through the spigot and is held against the socket due to the pressure of the liquid within the members.
