659,452. Photo-electric flame detectors. METCALF, A. G. B. April 13, 1949, No. 10009. Convention date, April 19, 1948. [Class 40 (iii)] The flame of a fire in a vehicle engine is detected by a photo-sensitive element. As described, the invention is for the detection of fires in the cowling of an aircraft engine. As shown, the cylinder space 4 is separated from the fuel pump, oil pump and other engine accessories in the space 5 by a fire wall 6. Photo-cells 8 are mounted approximately in the plane of the cylinders and face inwardly and rearwardly. Similar photo-cells 9 and 10 are spaced at 90 degree intervals around the engine. The field of vision of the cells is chosen to exclude direct sunlight which might enter the rear of the cowling and the photo-cells may be enclosed and provided with filters 17 to cut out the visible spectrum. In the arrangement of Fig. 2 (not shown), the invention is applied to a turbo-jet engine, the cells being mounted in the engine shroud. The cell output is amplified and used to operate a warning light on the instrument panel. The photo-sensitive element may be a caesium oxide or silver photo-cell, a bolometer, a selenium cell, a lead sulphide semi-conductor or a special type of sodium or other photo-cell sensitive to ultra-violet.
