Abstract

1,141,125. Automatic smoke density control. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. May 5, 1967 [March 10, 1967], No.11492/67. Heading G3R. [Also in Division G1] A photo-electric smoke detector is used to measure the density of smoke in the exhaust gases of a gas turbine engine. A sample of exhaust gases is fed through an internally blackened sample chamber 1, through which light from source 5 is directed to an infrared sensitive photo-cell 8. The radiation is chopped by a rotating sector-vaned chopper 6. The detector output is amplified at 9 and 10 and indicated on meter 11, which may be calibrated, using a wire 12 of known diameter, in arbitrary units of known equivalence to smoke density. The detector circuitry is detailed in Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). A double triode connected as a longtailed pair is used for the pre-amplifier 9 and a double triode used as a push pull amplifier 10. The amplifier output is rectified and applied to a bridge circuit, comprising two halves of a double triode and resistors in the triode cathode circuits, the microammeter 11 being connected across the bridge. Sensitivity and meter range are adjustable. The sample of exhaust gases may be obtained from an engine under test when it is obtained from the jet pipe, a silencer or detuner, or from the jet pipe of an engine actually installed on the aircraft. The detector output can be used to control fuel-air ratio in the engine or the supply of a smoke-reducing additive to the exhaust gases.
