Abstract

1308829 Photo-electric flame monitor PEAK TECHNOLOGIES Ltd 2 Sept 1971 [18 June 1970] 29681/70 Heading G1A A photo-electric flame monitor comprises a photo-electric sensor viewing the flame through a filter, the transmission characteristics of the filter and the spectral sensitivity of the sensor defining a range of wavelengths which includes characteristic wavelengths in the flame produced by each of two fuels, so that the monitor may be used when a furnace is operated using either fuel. In Fig. 2, light from a flame passes through lens 26, via nickel oxide filter 29, which defines one end of the range by cutting out all light above about 0À4Á, to the cadmium-antimony cathode of phototube 31, the spectral sensitivity of which cuts off at about 0À3Á. The sensitive range of the instrument thus includes the 0À32Á peaks of gas, coal and oil flames. The photo-tube is connected to a Darlington pan transistor amplifier, connected to alarm circuitry. This may include the frequency sensitive circuit used in Specification 1214521 so that only high frequency flame fluctuations are effective. For gas flames, a frequency of 250 Hz and for coal and oil 1500 Hz is considered. The monitor may be provided with an extra broad band electric lamp in the sighting tube for checking the alarm facility.
