Abstract
659,272. Riveting. CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. March 16, 1949, No. 7180. Convention date, May 11, 1948. [Class 83 (iv)] A portable hydraulic riveter, more particularly adapted for seam cap riveting on railway car roofs, comprises a hollow yoke 18 having a pair of spaced jaws, a cylinder 21 maintained within the body of the yoke and adapted for connection with hose couplings 27, 33, a piston 35, a reciprocable rivet set holder 53, a pivoted rocker arm 41 contacting at one end the piston-rod 37 and at the other the rivet set holder 53, a dolly 69, a suspension means 93 for said yoke, a pressure-pad arrangement positioned on one jaw, and control means affixed to said yoke for control of a hydraulic power unit coupled to the riveter which is operable to move said piston. The end of the pistonrod 37 is bifurcated to receive one end of the rocker arm 41, and grooved to receive the ends of a pin 43 retained in the arm. The pin contacts the rear side only of the grooves 42 so that it is not loaded during the power movement of the piston. The arm 41 is pivoted by means of a pin 45 mounted in needle bearings in the yoke and its other end is received in the bifurcated end of the reciprocable set holder 53 and held by a pin and groove connection. On the opposite jaw of the yoke is a pressure pad arrangement, Fig. 6, comprising a sprung toggle lever system and a pressure-pad 59, having parallel sided extensions 73 which slidingly engage flat surfaces on the yoke jaw. Adjustment screws 64 maintain the centre pins 67 of the toggle at the required distance from the centre of the yoke to obtain the desired initial pressure of the pad. The dolly 69 is locked in a bore 71 in the jaw. The riveter is suspended by the arm 93 connected to the yoke by a trunnion arrangement the amount of swivel of which is limited by stops 101, 102. In operation, pressing the trigger 87 initiates supply of pressure oil to cause the piston 35 to move rearwards, whereby, since the set 57 abuts the work, the yoke 18 is constrained to move rearwards and the pressure-pad 59 squeezes the work, i.e. the seam cap assembly, Fig. 1, until the dolly 69 contacts the rivet. If the dolly and rivet are correctly aligned as observed through the slot 104, pressure is maintained on the trigger and oil and mechanical pressure build-up and heading begins. When the heading is completed, the pressure builds up to such a value as to automatically reverse the power plant and low pressure oil returns the piston 35. In a modification, Fig. 12, a set holder 112 is slidable within a liner 109 and may be actuated by a rocker arm as in the embodiment above. The pressure pad 123 slidably engages ribs on the side of the yoke jaw 106, and the toggle is adjusted by the screw 134 so that the pressure pad firmly engages the work 117 just before the dolly 118 engages the shank end of the rivet 116.
