[Class 35] [Also in Group XXXVI] A magnetic system for providing a variable and reversible magnetic flux comprises a magnetic yoke 1 having surfaces 2 defining a part-cylindrical gap in which is located a rotatable magnet 3 with soft iron pole shoes 4 which are so dimensioned that they always overlap one or both surfaces 2 for at least half their area, so that as the magnet is rotated the flux in the yoke varies smoothly from a maximum to a minimum, reverses and increases to a maximum again. As shown applied to a permeameter, the specimen 7 under test bridges the yoke and the field strength measured by a magnetometer 9 while the change of flux in the specimen is measured by a fluxmeter 10 fed from a winding 11 on the specimen 7. The magnetic system may also be applied to a mass spectrometer.
