Abstract
658,839. Baling-presses. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. OF GREAT BRITAIN, Ltd. Nov. 5, 1948, No. 28800. Convention date, Dec. 26, 1947. [Class 94(i)] [Also in Group XXII] Baling apparatus, for compressing hay .&c. by means of a reciprocating plunger 21, Fig. 3, and automatically tying the bales with wire, comprises wire gripping and severing means carried by a rotor 47 which is intermittently operated to loop both ends of the wire strand 43 encircling the.bale 40 over a wire twisting element 48, so that, on rotation of the twisting means 48, a four-strand twist is secured. Hay is picked up by a rotor 17, Fig. 1, and conveyed by an auger device 18 to a baling chamber. The plunger 21, Fig. 3, pushes the bale against the wire loop 43 which pays out from a container 39 round a pulley 45 on a needle 34. The end of the wire is secured initially between jaws 80 and 83, Fig. 9, on the member 47. The jaw 80 is formed on a bell-crank 77 which is pivoted at 79 and carries a roller 66 engaging a stationary cam-track 64. The jaw 83 is also pivoted at 79 but is limited in movement by. a screw 84. Associated with the jaws is an adjustable shearing blade 89. A similar set of jaws 70, 73, 103 is provided on the opposite side of the rotor 47. In the initial position, the jaws 80, 83 are in the position shown in Fig. 7, which also shows a prevous tie before removal, with the wire passing round the rotor 47, through a slot 93, over a guard 122, Fig. 11, and so round the needle. When the bale is formed, the plunger 21 is withdrawn and the needly is raised by a crank mechanism and deposits the wire 95 between the jaws 70, 73, Fig. 6, the guard 122 having been withdrawn. Interrupted bevel gears 51, 60 then rotate the rotor 47 through half a revolution causing the wire 95 to be severed and the wire 92 to be released, while the hook 48 is rotated one revolution to loop the wires, the ends being held by a bracket 129. The hook 48'makes two further revolutions before the guard 122, which has been moved to the position of Fig. 7, is further advanced to strip the hook by a projection 125. The tying mechanism is duplicated, Fig. 11, so that two wires encircle each bale. A cam 105 controls the movements of the guard and stripper members.
