Abstract

658,699. Photographic processes. BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE. April 14, 1949, No. 10219. Convention date, April 17, 1948. Drawings to Specification. [Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Group XVI] A powder image for transfer electrostatically to paper &c. (see Group XVI) is formed by dusting the powder on to an insulating layer supported on a conductive plate, the image areas of the layer being defined photographically and carrying a static charge so that the powder adheres thereto in the required pattern. The plate may be prepared by draining the static charge from the non-image areas of a charged anthracene, sulphur, or other photo-conductive layer by photographic projection of a negative image thereon; alternatively the conductive plate may be coated with ammonium bichromate in (i) an aqueous solution of process glue, (ii) shellac emulsion, (iii) an aqueous solution of gum arabic; with (i) and (ii), after exposure through a negative the non-image areas are washed away with water or alcohol and the image areas are burnt in; with (iii), after exposure through a positive, the image areas are washed away with water, the metal is lightly etched and rinsed with alcohol, asphaltum varnish or other lacquer is applied, and the gum arabic along with the superposed lacquer in the non-image areas is removed with hot water.
