657,696. Viscosimeters. POSTANS, Ltd., and ARNOLD, M. H. M. July 24, 1948, Nos. 19834 and 26242. [Class 106 (ii)] The viscosity of a fluid such as an alkyd resin in a receptacle 3 is measured by observing the difference in pressure on either side of an orifice plate. The fluid is circulated by a pump 4 at constant pressure along a conduit 5 jacketed at 6 to ensure uniform temperature to an orifice plate 8 which is immersed in a liquid filled chamber 7 at a constant temperature. The fluid passes through the orifice 8a and is returned to the receptacle 3. On either side of the orifice plate 8, diaphragms or bellows 9 are provided enclosed by diaphragm chambers 10, 11 which communicate by way of pipe lines 10a, 11a, with a liquid manometer 12 which indicates the pressure difference existing between the two sides of the orifice plate and is calibrated in terms of viscosity. In a modification shown in Fig. 2, a Venturi tube 17 is substituted for the orifice plate the pressure difference being measured in a similar manner between the throat of the Venturi and the conduit immediately in front of it. The indicating manometer may be employed in conjunction with recording means to obtain a permanent record, or to actuate a control mechanism.
