Abstract

657,694. Looms with stationary weft supply. COLIBERT, R. R. F., and BOURLET. E. July 7, 1948, No. 18263. Convention date, July 12, 1947. [Class 142(ii)] Weft is inserted from each side of a warp alternately by a dummy shuttle comprising a thread gripping member and a member which is propelled through the shed by a picking stick and carries the gripping member. The gripping member comprises a soft iron portion 25 and a stud 26 which grips the weft 31. A piece of spring wire 29 causes the gripping action. The stud stud 26 is raised to grip the weft by the plunger of an electromagnet positioned beneath the shuttle race. The carrying member 32 comprises a wooden body in the shape of the usual shuttle and carries a permanent magnet 34 having poles 35. After picking, the member 32 passes over the gripping member and an electromagnet positioned above the gripping member causes the magnet 34 to attract the gripping member and carry it through the shed. The gripping member is stopped after it leaves the shed by a stop and is held against this stop, and immediately above the finger which raises the stud 26, by a finger operated by an electromagnet. The gripping member is held down on the shuttle race during the raising of the stud 26 by an electromagnet positioned beneath the shuttle race or by the gripping member entering a groove or by mechanical means. The weft is presented to the gripping member by a transfer device 48 which is rocked by an electromagnet 59 to grasp one of the wefts projecting from a thread guide box 46. The guide box 46 is reciprocated in the direction of the double-headed arrow A according to which weft is to be grasped by the transfer device. While the device 48 is moving towards .the guide box, a cam 55 moves a sliding member to open the jaws 49. The jaws are closed on a weft end when the end 54 of the sliding member engages a notch on the cam. The inserted weft is cut by movable blades 65 operated by an electromagnet. The various electromagnets are operated by cams keyed on the main shaft. A selvedge is formed by directing a current of compressed air on to the weft end and blowing it into the shed. The compressed air may be obtained from a bellows attached to the slay. The gripping, cutting, and positioning mechanism may be adjusted laterally to allow the weaving of fabrics of different widths.
