Abstract

657,428. Metal appliques. BOEING AIRPLANE CO. June 18, 1948, No. 16481. Convention date, June 18, 1947. [Class 93] A metal applique comprises an aluminium base foil with indicia on its surface, the surface being anodized and at least a portion thereof being dyed to establish a colour difference between the indicia and the background. The term " foil " includes metal not thicker than 0.005 inch and preferably between 0.002 and 0.003 inch. The anodized layer on each side is preferably about one-sixth of the total thickness of the foil. It is preferred to anodize in sulphuric acid. If a matt finish is required the foil is first etched in, e.g. ammonium bifluoride. The dyeing may be effected on a whole surface and parts later removed by etching leaving some of the anodized or natural surface exposed or the desired area only may be dyed, in both cases using protecting coatings Such as a printing ink or a lacquer. After dyeing, the surface is preferably sealed by dipping in a solution of nickel acetate. The applique is affixed by soldering or brazing or by an adhesive. Specifications 445,242, [Group XVI], 477,286, 483,228, 503,451 and 584,940 are referred to.
