Abstract

656,980. Load-handling apparatus. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and RUSSELL, R. G. Jan. 21, 1949, No. 1759. [Class 78 (iii)] A travelling lifting gear for handling coils, such as heavy coils of strip metal, comprises a vertically movable cradle mounted on a carriage movable horizontally in a pit and arranged to support a coil at substantially ground level, the pit being covered by a false floor having two parallel slots therein extending in the direction of the horizontal travel of the cradle, and the cradle being supported on the carriage by two arms passing through the slots and movable vertically or horizontally therein. In the embodiment shown, the cradle 10 is supported by plates 11 connected together by a member 12 secured to the upper end of a ram 13 operating in a cylinder 14 mounted on a carriage 15 in a pit 18. The mouth of the pit is closed by plates 23 supported by joists 25, and by joists 27 supported at the ends of the pit by brackets 28 secured to the joists 25. The plates 11 extend through slots formed by gaps between the plates 23 and the joists 27, whilst a link 29 forming part of the cradle controlling mechanism extends through the gap between the joists 27. The carriage is moved to and fro on its tracks 17 by a ram 21 having its piston rod 20 connected to an arm 19 depending from the carriage.
